Early Intervention is a program designed for families with infants/ toddlers birth to age three who are at risk of a disability and or have a developmental delay. This program is an entitlement in Pennsylvania which is at no cost to the family. Early Intervention provides individualized supports and services based on a family training model which is embedded in the family and child daily activities and routines by providing the family with techniques and strategies to assist them in helping their child develop. Early Intervention is not a medical model.
Anyone can make a referral to Early Intervention. Once the referral is made an evaluation will be schedule to determine eligibility. The infant/toddler will need to show a 25% or greater delay in any of the five areas of development (cognition, communication, gross/ fine motor, adaptive and self help).
Once eligibility is determined, an individual service plan is developed with the family to help enhance the family’s capacity to facilitate their child’s development. Services offered by Early Intervention include speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and special Instruction. Services and support are individualized to match the family and their child needs.
